Areas
in France that are subject to subsidence and cracking
Introduction
The
French government provides a guarantee for insurance companies
that provide compulsory natural disaster insurance cover through
the Caisse Centrale de Reassurance (CCR). Please click on House
insurance in France to get more information on this.
The
insurance system is based on a law that came into force in 1982
and is aimed at protecting all French citizens against natural
disasters such as flooding and subsidence due to dessication of
the soil beneath foundations.
Gelogical
mapping
Recent
droughts have caused a constant increase in the cost of subsidence
claims between 1989 and 2000 and these are reported to have amounted
to 3,200 million euros in total over this period. As a result
a massive effort has gone into mapping all the departments that
are susceptible to subsidence and currently 44 departments have
been mapped in detail. These tend to be concentrated on the main
river basins in France and hence include nearly all South West
France but surprisingly not Department 16 - Charente.
